In 1990 we decided to try and put together a game based on our sync scroll technology and some graphics that we'd used in the menu to The Cosmic Demo. It was a shoot-em-up, and since we wanted it to be violent, we decided to call it "The Last Resort" (from the English saying, "violence is always the last resort". It was sub-titled "A Game Of Violence". That could well have been the best thing about it.

We never actually finished the game. We got as far as working out the map editing and the game control, but had some bugs in the graphic engine (particularly around the flight of bullets and the sync scroller). We put together a disk which we were going to use to pitch to game companies in the hope that they would help fund the development and eventually sell it, but never got any further.

The Intro

The intro to the game gave some credits and tried to flog the game to publishers. We even begged for some new hardware to help us write it.

The game itself featured the same guy as the intro to our Cosmic demo, running around a 4-way sync-scrolling landscape and shooting. That's about as far as we got with it, and it was buggy at that.

The High-Score Table

When the player achieved a high score, their name would appear in this table. It scrolled up and down on a sine wave (as all the best things do) while a big scroller put "THE LAST RESORT" bouncing around in the background.

All the code in The Last Resort was by Chris, with all the graphics being done by Ian. The in-game music was by Mad Max of Tex and the intro music was ripped from the Amiga.
